The effect of support modification with nickel and promotion with copper on the competitive reaction of DBT hydrodesulfurization and carbazole hydrodesnitrogenation using CuNiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was evaluated. The catalysts were characterized by XRF, BET specific area, FT-IR and acid site determination. The catalytic activity in the HDN reaction of carbazole and dibenzothiophene (DBT) HDS was evaluated. XRF analysis showed agreement between nominal and experimental values of Mo/Cu= 6 and Cu/(Cu+Ni)= 0.65 ratios. The specific areas were within the interval 152-207 m2/g with a pore diameter distribution between 5.3-5.5 nm. FT-IR exhibited characteristic bands of terminal and bridging Mo-O bonds associated with the Anderson-type structure and vibrations of Cu-O bonds. The catalysts and support presented weak and very weak acidity, respectively. The catalytic evaluation showed pseudo-first order behavior based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation, and the carbazole HDN conversion products were below 4%, i.e., it had high conversion to HDS despite such effect.
