Potencial biotecnológico de levaduras identificadas en Norte de Santander

Yeasts are eukaryotic organisms called unicellular fungi, they present oval, spherical, cylindrical, or ellipsoidal morphology. This group has been exploited in various industrial fields and the agri-food sector, specifically in the production of beers, bread and wine. Yeast isolates obtained in different environments of the Norte de Santander department, are kept in the Strain Bank of the Francisco de Paula Santander University. In order to characterize and identify these microorganisms, the strains were recovered and purified, their morphology was described macroscopically and microscopically; they were identified using the API 20 C AUX biochemical gallery; viability tests were carried out on different conservation methods, and finally stored in the strain bank. According to the results, the 25 strains obtained correspond to: Candida guilliermondii (9), Saccharomyces cerevisiae (5), Candida tropicalis (4), Candida famata (2), Candida utili (1), Cryptococcus laurentii (1), Cryptococcus albidus (1), Trichosporon mucoides (1), and Candida pelliculosa (1). It was established that the 30% glycerol preservation method is ideal for yeasts. The strains can be used in research and explore their biotechnological potential in different productive sectors. The genera: Candida, Cryptococcus and Trichosporon are of clinical consideration, which should be handled with caution.
